All presentations:

INTERNET & TECHNOLOGY SAFETY:

Grades 3-5

  • Identifying types of personal information
  • Types of online danger
  • Appropriate communication
  • Discussion regarding “real life” vs “internet” and SAME ‘real life’ rules apply
  • Discussion – “Internet is like Halloween” (anonymity)
  • What to do when you feel funny, confused, or scared about something you see online.
  • Giving out personal information-What is “too much information??”

  • Social Networking Sites (Myspace, Facebook, Xanga, etc)
  • Safety settings – what are they, who uses them, etc.
  • Predator scenarios (Powerpoint)
  • What to do if approached/harassed?
  • Colleges & Employers ~ Looking out for ourselves & our futures!
  • Where to go for help? Discussion of the importance of having a “go to” adult you can trust.
  • How to be” Street Smart”….online!
  • In what ROOM should we keep our computers??
  • UH-OH….”I didn’t MEAN to click on THAT!!” What to do when accidently visit a website that is inappropriate.
  • CELL PHONES & “Sexting” ~ The dangers of texting illicit/inappropriate messages or photos via cell phone.
  • Online harassment (“cyber-bullying”)-what is it, what to do if it occurs & how to avoid BEING an offender, as well.

HARASSMENT & BULLYING

Grades K-5

Presentations are age-appropriate.  Some material listed may not be included for younger audiences.

  • What is respect? What does it look like?
  • Listening to others
  • Being polite and courteous
  • Insults:  What are they? Why do they hurt?
  • “Put downs are no fun” discussion/activities
  • Are my actions and words hurting others?
  • Am I trying to control someone against his/her will?
  • Could my actions or words make someone afraid?
  • Being a helpful citizen:  Standing up for what is right.

SEXUAL HARASSMENT & BULLYING

Grades 6-Adult

Presentations are age-appropriate.  Some material listed may not be included for younger audiences.

  • Definitions of sexual harassment/harassment.
  • Identification of the emotional/behavioral effects of harassment
    • Why does harassment occur??
    • Explanation of 3 types of sexual harassment (verbal, physical, non-verbal/physical) & engage students for examples.
    • Discussion of HOSTILE ENVIRONMENT & QUID PRO QUO.
    • Explanation of the differences between flirting & sexual harassment
    • Role playing/Activity ~ (staring, close proximity, whistling, etc)
    • Activity with students using newsprint to make posters (“flirting/harassment makes you feel….”)
    • How to handle sexual harassment/harassment & identifying the necessary steps to take.
    • Discussion of boundaries & the importance of setting personal boundaries.
    • Identifying a “red flag” when someone has violated their boundaries.
    • Understanding the violence continuum and how a minor incident can eventually lead to a more violent crime

SEXUAL ASSAULT:

Grades 6-Adult

  • The effects of sexual violence
  • Sexual violence definitions using “umbrella”
  • Interactive class activity ~ Dispelling MYTHS using “movie scenario”.
  • Discussion of incapacitation, date/acquaintance rape, alcohol & date rape drugs.
  • Explanations of freely-given CONSENT.
  • Discussion of coercion, pressure, dating, communication.
  • Further education on consent using activities ~ water bottle, pen, etc.
  • “Megan & Cory” (Interactive skit, if desired)

MEDIA LITERACY:

Grades 4-Adult

  • Observation of various forms of media

  • Learning that media is a modern day story teller but is it telling a “true story??”
  • Discussion of positive & negative media messages.
  • How to take action against offensive materials.

  • The correlation between media images and violence in today’s society.
  • Addressing male & female stereotypes.
  • Time Permitting, observation of “Tough Guise” with Jackson Katz, PhD (Anti-Sexist Male Activist)

GENDER BIAS/GENDER ROLES:

Grades 5-Adult

  • Assumptions can lead to stereotypes and unfair judgments about individuals and groups.
  • Discussion of gender & sex – identifying the difference.
  • Gender stereotypes can lead to sexual violence.
  • Discussion of important terms
  • Identify gender stereotypes that exist in our society.
  • Recognize the impact these stereotypes have on everyday life.
  • Discuss the impact that language & name-calling can have on a person.
  • Stereotypes and biases affect our lives.
  • “Gender Boxes” – Class activity

 

PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS:

Grades K-4

  • Discussion:  “Being a caring person.”
  • How do our actions and words affect others?
  • Being sensitive to others’ feelings
  • Basic communication skills

PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS

Grades 5-Adult

  • Discussion with group on what is a relationship & types of relationships.
  • “Agree/Disagree” game based on various statements regarding relationships.
  • Defining “Healthy Relationships” (group definition focusing on trust, communication, respect, & honesty).
  • “Healthy vs. Unhealthy relationships
  • “Red Flags Quiz” – handout that details warning signs that can be taken home or discussed in class, depending on time.  *Ensuring/clarifying that although a relationship might have a red flag, this does not necessarily mean the relationship should end immediately, but rather focusing on the lines of communication opening to attempt healing and strengthening.
  • Communication skills
  • Identifying the 4 key concepts of a healthy relationship
  • Ways & helpful tips to establish healthy relationships

 

**NEW!!** PERSONAL BODY SAFETY INTERACTIVE PUPPET SHOW (K-4)

  • Using age-appropriate themes, puppets present a story that teaches children about SAFE, hurtful and confusing touches.
  • After an introduction to Personal Body Safety, puppets present an interactive show that reinforces safety messages & encourages children to problem, as well.
  • After the puppet show, educators discuss the Personal Body Safety Rules with worksheets and one-on-one attention.  Students are also given a guide to share with their adults at home.

The Personal Body Safety Rules:

  1. My body belongs to me.
  2. There are different kinds of touches.
  3. Touches in private areas are only to keep me clean & healthy
  4. If I am hurt or scared, I’ll tell a grownup I trust.
  5. I will keep telling until I get the help I need.

 

 

 

‘EXPLORING RELATIONSHIPS’

Adult Education Program:  Gardiner & Augusta

Grades 9-Adult

This class offers a unique & rewarding opportunity to explore the many facets of relationships.  Students will examine the crucial role relationships have on one’s health, personal safety, and happiness.  Exploring Relationships analyzes factors that influence relationships (such as making healthy choices), increases awareness of social issues, and promotes positive ways to interact with partners, family, peers, and others.  Students will examine various aspects of healthy and unhealthy relationships and will also analyze stereotypes, dispel common myths, and explore dynamics of interpersonal relationships.

Some topics discussed include:

  • Power & Culture
  • Discrimination/prejudice
  • Gender roles
  • LGBT awareness
  • Sexual harassment (in school AND the workplace); Hostile Environment & Quid Pro Quo
  • Sexual violence
  • Healthy vs Unhealthy relationships
  • Media Literacy
  • Substance Abuse & mental health as they relate to violence
